On May 12, the Council of the University of Latvia (LU) approved establishing the BA School of Business and Finance (BASBF) as a separate institution within the LU structure.

The consolidation plan of both higher education institutions, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on May 23, 2023, has officially made BASBF part of the LU community, becoming the business school of the largest university in Latvia.

The LU is a national leader in the social sciences, including economics and business. Therefore, integrating BASBF into the LU ecosystem is a natural step. At the same time, it presents an opportunity for LU to become the leading player in business education in the Baltics and a key driver of Latvia’s economic transformation,” emphasized LU Rector, Professor Gundars Bērziņš.

During a joint meeting of both university councils, BASBF Rector Līga Peiseniece presented BA’s future development strategy, aiming to position BASBF as a regional business school of Baltic significance. The strategy focuses on enhancing study quality, advancing new research directions, and offering internationally accredited study programs in financial technologies (fintech).

“BASBF is an integral part of the financial sector ecosystem. We prepare highly demanded and well-paid professionals in management and finance. Joining the LU family will enable us to take the next step in our development and compete internationally with our financial education programs. We have the expertise — and now, the scale,” said BASBF Rector, Professor Līga Peiseniece.

The integration into LU will not affect BASBF’s current study programs or the contracts signed with students. As part of the LU ecosystem, BASBF will continue to offer its competitive study programs while developing new interdisciplinary ones, creating a platform for digital solutions and international growth.

BASBF’s integration into LU is part of a broader higher education reform aimed at strengthening research capacity and improving the quality of education. Combining BASBF’s niche expertise in financial education with LU’s broad academic environment will create a powerful synergy, offering students even greater growth opportunities both in Latvia and internationally.

In the academic year of 2025/2026, student admissions for both institutions will continue separately, as before, through the unified application system at Latvija.lv. BASBF will officially begin operating as the business school within the LU on September 1, 2025.

The consolidation process is taking place within the framework of the Recovery and Resilience Facility-supported project “Internal and External Consolidation of the University of Latvia” (No. 5.2.1.1.i.0/2/24/I/CFLA/007).
